Ashes To Ashes Season 2 Finale

BBC: Ashes To Ashes

So, Ashes to Ashes, the time travelling retro 80s police drama series has ended Season 2 with a pretty good cliff hangar – depending on how you look at it and the Quattro made it through intact too. There is certainly enough scope for a season 3 should the powers that be decide so with a number of threads left unanswered. The face of Gene Hunt haunting Alex Drake on the screens at the end seemed a little out of character to me but acted as a fitting end to the current season and it was great to see Alex reunited with her daughter Molly – although it did not last very long.

Ashes to Ashes has certainly been a different style of show to Life On Mars and definitely picked up from its dip in the middle – the clues and subtext seem to have lessened since the first series as the Alice In Wonderland style imagery has been less subtle. Even Sam Tyler got a mention in the final episode (keeping the continuity for a future storyline perhaps?). It was good to see a recurring foe in this series, although the seemingly last minute plot point of the Jenette character could have benefited from building up her character in a few earlier episodes to tie it all together.

During the series the characters of Ray and Chris have had time to develop and round out with some definite surprises, and humour, along the way. It would be great to learn a little more about the reality behind the world in which Gene Hunt resides. I had thought this time round Alex, with her skills in psychology, might have been sent back to redeem our lovable Gene Hunt but it looks like this was not to be and instead the format echoed the Sam Tyler story line with a big showdown.

So, is Alex back in 2008 or was she always in 1982? Or is she now in a coma in a coma ? The whole thing could get quite complicated but lets hope we get to find out.

Update: It seems Ashes to Ashes has made it to a third season (as reported on Digital Spy) so we may get our questions answered after all – I wonder what would happen if the team came forward in time to 2009? What would they make of it all?
