Ranking: Website popularity services

A common way of checking web site reach and popularity is to see how it compares to other sites using a ranking service. I recently wrote about one of these services: Alexa - traffic ranking and their popularity show that they clearly play an important part in the search world.

Keyword and tag searching is useful (keywords or tags or both) but how can a search engine deem the effectivity or authority of a particular site. One way would be by seeing how many visitors a site has and how often they visit and how often other websites refer back (cite) a particular web page on a site. Reference citing is an important part of the academic world and something which is making its way over into popular culture. If a user conducts a search it might be better to offer results based on some authority that a website has gained through a combintation of reference citing and visitor information.

  3. There is some controversy over how representative Alexa’s user base is of typical Internet behavior. If http://www.alexa.com/data/details/main?url=www.fortunehotels.in Alexa’s user base is a fair statistical sample of the internet user population, Alexa’s ranking should be quite accurate.
