Diving deep into the past with retro gaming
Do you remember the old ZX Spectrum game Scuba Dive by Durell?
Scuba Dive must have been one of the early games I played on my 48K Spectrum and it was quite addictive. The general idea was to dive off a boat and set off to collect oyster pearls without getting hurt or running out of air – the deeper you dove the higher the reward. Getting back to the boat was tricky enough but all the more satisfying for it. All manner of sea creatures were on hand to catch you out – the shark is one animated image which sticks firmly in my mind.
I seem to remember the game lacked sound but in those days most games seemed to lack sound but the graphics, at the time, more than made up for it. Back in 1984 both Your Spectrum and Crash magazine raved about Scuba Dive – versions were available on other platforms but for me the ZX Spectrum version ruled.
