Doctor Who – Episode 7 – Amy’s Choice
The 7th episode of the new series of Doctor Who starts with five years having passed since Amy and Rory last travelled with the Doctor in the TARDIS (why does he keep leaving them behind! Ed). The Doctor promptly lands in Amy’s garden on the eve of Amy giving birth to her first child. Amy is now married to Rory who is now a Doctor of medicine.
When Amy, Rory and the Doctor fall asleep and appear in the TARDIS it soon becomes clear all is not well and the three of them spend most of the episode flitting between the TARDIS and the Earth courtesy of the Dream Lord who gives them (and in particular Amy) the choice to choose one of the realities – as one is real and one is a dream. If you die in a dream you live in reality – however the other way round doesn’t work!
On Earth we are introduced to the Ha’rik who look like a little green eye appearing out of the mouth of the host and have taken over the bodies, in a parasitic way, of the village’s elderly residents. The Ha’rik begin killing the villagers by spraying a cloud rendering their victims to dust and soon go after Amy, Rory and the Doctor.
When Rory is killed (yes, killed!) by the Ha’rik Amy realises she loves him and decides that the Earth reality is in fact the dream and is proved correct when she crashes an escape camper van and appears back on the TARDIS where Rory is alive and well (although a bit chilly!).
Having defeated the Dream Lord the Doctor realises that dream psychic dust was to blame and that he (the Doctor) was in fact the Dream Lord all along (projecting the worst of people into their dreams).
What did I think?
It got confusing keeping up with the flitting between the two realities although, an interesting episode introducing the Ha’rik who I assume will appear in another episode later in the series as they seemed like ordinary people until they open their mouths and have what looks like a green eye hiding behind.
The Dream Lord shows a darker side of the Doctor reminding me somewhat of the Master (who is alluded to in the episode) and no doubt the Doctor’s darker side will appear later in the series – if the reflection in the desk surface is anything to go by.
Arthur Davill’s character Rory is very funny and the ponytail for this episode was a nice touch, I do hope we see more of his character. I enjoyed this episode more than last weeks as it gave an insight into a possibly darker Doctor and Amy finally choosing Rory over the Doctor.
On the Sammy Sonar I rate this episode 8 out of 10.
