Doctor Who Waters Of Mars, Washout or Oasis Spring?
What did you think of Doctor Who Waters Of Mars? It scared the bejeebers out of our kids for sure and it was about time we got another episode of David Tennant as the much loved Doctor.
In what was clearly a reflection piece as the current Doctor enters the autumn of his generation we find an introspective Doctor who almost crosses the line (or possibly even crosses the line) between observer and master. Is time fixed? If a time lord cannot pla around with the timeline then who can – right?
Like the Vasha Nerada, in Silence in the Library, it was good to see something new and add creatures to the story that we haven’t seen before, even though the producers almost couldn’t help themselves by dropping a Dalek in there somewhere. I can almost imagine the team production meeting when right at the last moment, when the story is done and ready for production, someone in the upper echelons panics and drops a Dalek into the story for good measure. And what’s the consistent flash of the web pages all about – does the Doctor get his information out of Google now?
The end of the story was something of a washout (hehe) for me on a number of fronts. Firstly, why was the robot required in order to recall the Tardis when canon, in recent Doctor Who history, has already established the Doctor can will the Tardis to appear? Also, as the base is destroyed by a nuclear explosion the Doctor does not actually know the exact fate of the individuals – he could simply have dropped them off on a new planet, or wiped their memories and dropped them off in another timeline? Clearly, the Doctor is becoming a little sidetracked by his impending doom. By interfering is he bringing about his own future as he alludes to at the story outset?
It was good to see a new Doctor Who story and the flash forward to the return of the Master, and the long awaited return of Donna, offers some serious anticipation for the next episode.
