EVE Online: Getting Started
Are you thinking of playing the popular MMORPG EVE Online? If so, there are probably many things you have questions about. First you need to know that EVE is different from other MMORPGs in several ways. The learning curve is higher with EVE and the method of levelling up is different and operates in real time.
However, it’s a fun and exciting game, especially for someone looking for a new type of game or someone bored with the ordinary MMORPGs. If you’re not sure yet if EVE is right for you, they have an excellent 14 day free trial you can find and download right from their home page. This allows you to check out the game for 2 full weeks before you take the plunge and purchase it.

EVE Online takes place around 20,000 years after our time and in a galaxy at the far end of the universe. You can explore far out galaxies and more. Technology has come a long way and in the game, you join EVE and take on the role of a freshly graduated Capsuleer.
Capsuleers are an elite group of spaceship pilots who are capable of controlling very powerful spaceships on their own from their capsules. This is a small group and only the best of the best make it in. This game is all about exploration and space combat with four playable races and many in-game professions and other activities to keep you occupied for a long time to come.
EVE has 5,000 unique solar systems which are yours to explore and even conquer as you choose. Everything operates under what is called a single “shard” virtual world. This means that everyone who joins EVE plays together in the same world and the same community.
This is different from most MMOPRGs which operate on multiple shards, or smaller servers, where each player will only have a limited amount of interaction with other players (only those on their server). With EVE, you have the opportunity to interact with over 150,000 different players.
As we mentioned, a free trial is an excellent way to get started but keep in mind there will be a few limitations to the trial phase. Some skills will not be trainable and you won’t be able to transfer ISK. This is mainly to keep the currency “farmers” at bay.
When you do choose to purchase a full version of the game, you can do so online from their website. All you have to do is upgrade your free trial membership to a paid membership and you can keep your character and existing account for only $14.95 per month.
There are a variety of ways to pay for your subscription to make it easier for you including PayPal, credit card, ETC (EVE Time Code) and Pay by Cash. If you purchased a copy of EVE Online from a local store, there is also an option to add your CD key and any time on that CD key will be allotted to your account. Your account will be activated immediately so you can easily and instantly start playing.
