Why Should You Retweet worthwhile Tweets?
If you are familiar with Twitter you will know that one of the things you can do on the site is to retweet what someone else has tweeted. Basically this means you tweet the exact same tweet, but with the username of the original tweeter at the front of the message. Normally it will appear like this – RT @username. RT obviously is a shortened version of retweet so it uses fewer characters.
But why do it? Well the main reason why you would do it is because you have come across a tweet that is particularly worthwhile: something that you feel would be worth drawing your own readers’ attention to. But it also enables you to make connections with the people you are retweeting. They will see that their username has been mentioned and will then realise that you have retweeted one of their messages.
Sometimes you will get a thank you for this and other times you won’t. But regardless you will have made a connection with them. And if you retweet them more than once, you will strengthen that connection for the future. A lot of people get more followers as a result of retweets too. This act of giving something to someone else will result in getting more back yourself too – even if it doesn’t quite happen in the way you think it will!
Some tweeters tend to forget that Twitter is an online community. They can be so focused on getting the results they want for their business that they forget what else the site can offer. Retweeting is a part of that community spirit. It’s about seeing something that someone else has mentioned, and sharing it with your own community and followers.
Over time you may also receive the benefits of having some of your own tweets retweeted by other users. When this happens be sure to thank them for doing so. It forges a stronger bond between you and you can build on that in the future.
You don’t need to be close to everyone on Twitter. You don’t need to forge a business relationship with every follower, or everyone you follow either. But you do need to use all the functions and features that Twitter provides you with, and as you can see the retweet function is one worth bearing in mind for the future.
