WordPress 2.8: How To Upgrade For The Nervous

The latest version of WordPress has been released, taking the blogging platform up to version 2.8. The new version doesn’t look significantly different to version 2.7, but it does contain some bug fixes and, usefully, a syntax highlighter for the built in code editor, which should make online editing of files and plugins much easier. The auto-installer for plugins has also been expanded to include themes, this means you can search for and install a new template straight from your dashboard.

Upgrade WordPress

If you haven’t upgraded yet, it really is a good idea to do so, each new version tends to be more secure than the last, and while bells and whistles are nice, security is paramount! If you are new to WordPress and nervous about upgrading your blog, don’t be. It’s very easy, and can be done in a matter of minutes. If you still aren’t convinced, I’ll take you through it step by step …

1) Back up your database: You can do this using phpMyAdmin located in the control panel on your hosting server, but it’s not very intuitive and many people feel uncomfortable dealing directly with the database. Instead, install the WP-DB-Backup plugin, which you can use from your dashboard.

2) Back up your blog: Simply go to ‘Tools/Export’ in your dashboard sidebar, and click ‘Download Export File’. It’s as simple as that.

3) Deactivate your plugins: This is an optional step, not everyone chooses to do it, but it is a good idea because occasionally there will be compatibility problems.

4) Upgrade: There are two ways to do this. You can download the latest version of WordPress and install it manually – it’s pretty easy, but if you don’t feel confident about doing that, simply go to ‘Tools/Upgrade’ and use the automatic upgrade option.

5) Check it’s all working: It should be, it’s unusual for problems to occur, especially with the automatic upgrader. If it isn’t, visit the support forums for help. If it is, reactivate your plugins one by one – this way you can ensure they all work with the new version.

6) You’ve done it! Give yourself a pat on the back, well done!
